Calgary, Alberta, Canada H&R Block Full time

The Opportunity:

As a key member of the H&R Block team, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the company's data architecture vision and roadmap. Reporting to the Enterprise Architect, you will drive the transformation of our client and associate experience, aligning with our growth goals for Block Journey 2028.

By fostering growth and transformation, you will ensure that H&R Block delivers a trusted "My Block" experience, serving clients "Anywhere, Anyway, Anytime." Your expertise will be instrumental in bringing together all client data under one "one client" domain, directly supporting the omnichannel/retail client journey.

You will solidify the data foundation and roadmap necessary for a successful CRM migration and implementation, reducing costs, delays, and risks associated with implementation and ongoing changes. Your efforts will also focus on reducing data syncing and friction points in critical systems such as financial transactional information, enabling smoother operations.

Your work will empower future growth and business modernization through the adoption of automation and AI technologies, streamlining and cleaning up legacy data service environments to reduce operational costs and establish a strong foundation for data analytics and mining.

This position is based in Calgary and offers a hybrid work schedule, with 3 days per week in-office.

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Develop and take ownership of a strategic data architecture vision and roadmap that aligns with and supports business architecture and incorporates emerging technologies.
  • Lead the review and enhancement of data management design, procedures, and guidelines for data storage, integration, resilience, availability, and lifecycle management. Design a blueprint that meets both business and technical requirements.
  • Provide a comprehensive understanding of business data across systems, driving data modeling optimization and redesign efforts to align with business procedures and functions.
  • Implement best practices, such as establishing a single source of truth in the transitional (upstream) data domain.
  • Oversee regular review and assessment of the organization's data architecture to ensure compliance with standards, identify areas for improvement, and measure the effectiveness of data management policies and procedures.
  • Design and enhance a technology-enabled platform to support the implementation of data security, governance, and privacy policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to the definition of roles, responsibilities, and processes for managing HRB Canada's data assets.
  • Collaborate with the data services and analytics teams to define a future state design, processes, technologies, and roadmap for data transformation between systems.
  • Support H&R Block's current and future analytic and reporting needs, including real-time insights, self-service capabilities, and access controls.
  • Contribute to the development and empowerment of data analytics capabilities.
  • Assist in assessing and designing data warehousing and data streaming solutions.

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or relevant academic background, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 5-7 years of experience in data architecture assessment and road mapping, data modeling, and management platform design.
  • Strong proficiency in SQL & Non-SQL databases and related concepts.
  • Proven experience in Microsoft "Data in Cloud" technology stacks: Azure Database Services, Azure Data Pipelines (ADF), Azure SQL, Storage Account, etc.
  • Proven knowledge of data analytics platform design including ETL processes and data visualization.
  • Important assets are experience in Master Data Management, Machine Learning & AI, CRM migration, data security & privacy, and reporting design.
  • Preferred skills include familiarity with IAM/Entra ID, understanding of data governance principles, knowledge of Agile and DevOps, experience with Big Data and Microservices, proficiency in programming with SQL or Python, and expertise in Azure Cloud (A8S, Databricks, and Open AI).

Do you have a passion for Data Architecture, along with the skills and qualifications required for this opportunity?
