Job Summary
The Oncology Nurse Specialist will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care in the Oncology department at Michael Garron Hospital. This role requires a Registered Nurse with current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario and a minimum of 2-3 years of recent experience in Oncology and Cancer Therapy.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care relative to nursing needs of patients with cancer/hematological diagnoses.
- Deliver IV and oral chemotherapy/biotherapy, blood/blood products, and demonstrate clinical competence in IV therapy, including challenging IV insertions.
- Manage central venous access devices, including PICC, Hickman, and Port-a-cath.
- Provide education to patients and families on cancer and hematological disorders, and demonstrate knowledge of current chemotherapy/biotherapy protocols and alternatives.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive clinical documentation according to Cancer Care Ontario guidelines.
- Participate in unit quality initiatives and measurements, including the collection of workload statistics and audit information.
- Contribute to a transparent culture of patient and staff safety by adhering to and abiding by patient and staff safety policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Current Certificate of Registration issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of recent experience in Oncology and Cancer Therapy.
- Demonstrated clinical competence in IV therapy, including challenging IV insertions.
- Ability to manage central venous access devices, including PICC, Hickman, and Port-a-cath.
- Knowledge of current chemotherapy/biotherapy protocols and alternatives.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent time management and attendance record.
