About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Staff Scientist to join our team at the University of Toronto. As a key member of our research community, you will play a critical role in advancing the field of materials discovery and automation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement cutting-edge research programs that leverage our Self-Driving Labs (SDLs) to discover new materials and molecules.
  • Collaborate with our team of experts to design and build novel instruments for automated material synthesis and characterization.
  • Manage and oversee the activities of our laboratory technicians and ensure the smooth operation of our labs.
  • Develop and execute research projects that meet the needs of our industry partners and advance the research objectives of our faculty and industry partners.
  • Supervise and mentor research staff, including Staff Scientists, Software Engineers, Research Associates, and Post-doctoral Fellows.
  • Prepare and submit research proposals to granting agencies and progress reports.
  • Prepare manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals and steward them through the publication process.
Requirements
  • Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, life sciences, physics, engineering, robotics, computer science, or related discipline.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in research and development, preferably with significant experience in Physical, Material, Medicinal, and/or Analytical Artificial Intelligence for Chemistry, Materials or Drug Discovery.
  • Experience working closely with a Principal Investigator or as a Principal Investigator or as Project Director with responsibilities of managing, developing and executing a major research project.
  • Strong experience and expert knowledge of AI and automation.
  • Experience with overseeing the activities of a lab.
  • Experience working with industry partners and on industry lead research and development projects.
  • Strong experience presenting research at academic conferences.
  • Experience managing research staff.
  • Experience managing a laboratory budget and procuring equipment.
  • Demonstrated record of academic and/or research excellence.
  • Must have a strong scholarly publication record.
