Job Title: Legal Counsel, Privacy

We are seeking a highly skilled Legal Counsel, Privacy to join our team at the University of Waterloo. As a key member of our Legal and Immigration Services department, you will provide expert legal advice on privacy-related matters, ensuring the University meets its obligations under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain independent carriage of files with oversight of the General Counsel
  • Research and provide updates on case law, legislative requirements, and legal trends affecting the University
  • Identify legal issues, risks, and develop strategies to mitigate legal risks
  • Consult with the General Counsel on complex matters prior to giving advice to client departments
  • Draft and negotiate partnership agreements between the University and other educational institutions
  • Provide legal advice on commercial issues, including contract negotiation, drafting, and review
  • Offer consultation and advice on intellectual property law to academic and administrative stakeholders
  • Provide legal advice on privacy-related matters, including privacy leadership, compliance, and guidance
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Laws (L.L.B) or Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent law degree
  • Licensed to practice law in Ontario and a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • Relevant professional designation from the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) or other recognized professional body
  • Minimum 5 years of experience practicing law and providing legal advice to complex organizations
  • 3+ years of experience working with access to information and protection of privacy responding to access requests, privacy complaints, information breaches, and inquiries from the community
