The City of Barrie is seeking a highly skilled Plans Examiner 2 to join our Building Services Department. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and quality of construction projects within our community.

About the Role

The Plans Examiner 2 is responsible for examining permit applications, plans, and specifications for construction, renovation, change of use, and demolition of all classifications of buildings to ensure compliance with the Ontario Building Code, applicable municipal by-laws, and/or development agreements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Examine permit applications, plans, and specifications to ensure compliance with the Ontario Building Code and applicable municipal by-laws
  • Process and issue permits on behalf of the Chief Building Official when an application is deemed to comply with the prescribed requirements
  • Provide functional and/or technical guidance, direction, or interpretations to various stakeholders regarding the Ontario Building Code and applicable municipal by-laws
  • Conduct site inspections and respond to complaints/enquiries related to building construction and grading
Requirements
  • Three (3) year College Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Architectural Technology, or related discipline
  • Registered Building Official with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH)
  • Valid Building Code Identification Number (BCIN) from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH)
  • Qualifications in the following categories as defined under Part 3, Division C of the Building Code from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH): Building Services; Building Structural; Complex Buildings; General/Legal Process; Large Buildings; On-site Sewage Systems; Plumbing – All Buildings; Small Buildings
  • Eligibility for and willingness to obtain and maintain the Certified Building Code Official (CBCO) Designation from the Ontario Building Officials Association (OBOA)
