Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Mental Health Services Nurse to join our team at Island Health. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will provide high-quality care and support to individuals struggling with mental health and substance use issues.

Key Responsibilities
  • Client Care
    • Provide individualized care and support to clients with mental health and substance use issues.
    • Conduct comprehensive assessments and develop personalized treatment plans.
    • Collaborate with clients, families, and community agencies to ensure seamless care coordination.
  • Community Outreach
    • Develop and maintain relationships with community partners and stakeholders.
    • Provide education and support to community members on mental health and substance use issues.
  • Team Collaboration
    • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive care.
    • Participate in regular team meetings and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
  • Professional Development
    • Stay up-to-date with best practices and evidence-based treatments in mental health and substance use.
    • Participate in ongoing education and training opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
Requirements
  • Education and Experience
    • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant or a practicing RPN registrant.
    • Recognized post-basic education related to psychiatric nursing, substance use, harm reduction, and/or mental illness.
    • Two (2) years recent related experience.
  • Skills and Abilities
    • Working knowledge of chemical dependency, including the pathophysiology of substance abuse and withdrawal.
    • Working knowledge of the bio-psychosocial spiritual model of care and best practices for co-occurring disorders.
    • Ability to work with seriously addicted and mentally ill clients and their families.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
    • Ability to exercise critical thinking skills to analyze and resolve problems.
    • Ability to work independently, organize workload, and establish and carry out priorities.
    • Ability to facilitate groups and demonstrate leadership through teaching, coaching, and mentoring.
    • Valid BC Driver's License.
