Job Description

The Toronto Star is seeking a skilled Journalist to join our Editorial Department on a 12-month contract. The successful candidate will focus on City Hall reporting and have the opportunity to work with a talented team of journalists.

Key Responsibilities

  • Report and write authoritatively on breaking news and provide perspective and analysis
  • Collaborate with colleagues to produce stories that are accurate, comprehensive, compelling, and relevant
  • Develop and maintain contacts and sources, and show resourcefulness in gathering information
  • Interview people in often-demanding situations and produce succinct, clear, and accurate copy on deadline
  • Manage multiple projects and tasks, and have a self-starter mentality

Requirements

  • Professional experience as a reporter
  • Advanced journalism skills with a keen interest in current affairs and civic issues
  • Excellent news judgment, storytelling, and multimedia skills
  • Advanced writing skills and story-telling ability that lead to an engaging daily product
  • Diplomacy and well-developed interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with access to information procedures and databases
  • Well-versed in CP style

Salary and Benefits

The salary for this position is $59,360 to $93,863, and the hours of work will vary according to the assignment. This position is located in Toronto and is subject to the collective agreement between Toronto Star Newspapers Limited and Unifor Local 87M.
