The Role of the Software Requirements Engineer

The software requirements engineer will work closely with our software engineering department, product teams, and other stakeholders to ensure that our software products meet the needs of our customers. This will involve providing expert guidance on software requirements development and management processes, maintaining an ongoing comprehensive understanding of product requirements from an operational and technical perspective, and producing artifacts to assist with planning and concept development.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in software engineering practices, particularly related to requirements development and management. They will also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of the software requirements engineer will include:
• Representing the software design authority and providing requirements guidance to project and product teams
• Maintaining an ongoing comprehensive understanding of product requirements from an operational and technical perspective
• Providing expertise to the software engineering department regarding software requirements development and requirements management processes
• Chairing software requirements review meetings and communicating with stakeholders and managing stakeholder needs
• Attending all software design meetings to grow domain knowledge of products and ensure new features meet project requirements
• Developing and maintaining a strong understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC), V model, and dependencies of other software phases on quality requirements development
• Producing artifacts to assist with planning and concept development, such as product requirements traceability documentation, which can assist with demonstrating existing product compliance for new contracts or projects
• Regularly reporting status on tasks to the design authority lead
• Assisting the software engineering department with using a requirements management tool
• Assisting the manager, software engineering department, with building strong relationships with the PMO and other departments
• Assisting the manager software engineering in producing and reviewing software requirements processes and work instructions
• Ensuring that company engineering and ISO 9001 procedures and policies are adhered to at all times and all exceptions are immediately reported

Qualifications

To be considered for this role, you will need to have a degree in computer science, electrical or computer engineering, or engineering physics. You will also need to have experience working in a software and systems project in engineering, as well as knowledge of marine navigation and military concepts. Additionally, you will need to have thorough knowledge of software engineering practices, particularly related to requirements development and management, as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred qualifications include experience working with IBM DOORS, IBM DOORS DXL scripts, and collaboration, process, and visualization tools. We are also looking for someone who is able to multitask and context switch between projects, translate system level requirements into software product requirements, and learn quickly in a high-paced environment.
