Heritage Preservation Specialist

The Government of Alberta is seeking a skilled Restoration Craftsman to join our team. This role involves performing restoration, maintenance, and new construction on heritage properties in our portfolio.
About the Role
This position performs a variety of contemporary and traditional trades and crafts in the development and maintenance of these properties to ensure their preservation. Some key responsibilities include:
- Assisting in project planning by consulting with the Restoration Foreman to determine the broad requirements for assigned projects and organizing the necessary tools, equipment, and manpower.
- Performing historic restoration tasks such as modern and traditional carpentry, log working, thatching, plastering, and painting.
- Using various traditional tools like broad axes, scoring axes, slicks, chisels, and hand planes to accurately duplicate replacement logs and apply historic finishes.
- Involving in cyclical and preventative maintenance tasks at various remote sites throughout the province.
Required Skills and Qualifications
We are looking for an individual with some high school education, related training, and 2 years of related experience. Journeyman carpenter trade certification is preferred. The ideal candidate should be physically able to perform manual duties found in the position assignment and have an understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations. Additionally, they should be familiar with a wide range of modern tools and historic tools and equipment, including broad axes, adzes, and all traditional and power tools used in carpentry. Familiarity with the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada is also an asset.
