The Department of Research Facilities at St. Michael's Hospital is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Genomics Core Specialist to oversee and enhance the Molecular Biology/Genomics facilities within our Research Core Facilities (RCF) at the Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science (KRCBS). The RCF, a 36,000 square-foot, self-financed entity, is integral to the KRCBS's mission, providing cutting-edge equipment and expertise in biomedical science across five specialized areas: Flow Cytometry/Cell Sorting, Molecular Biology/Genomics, Bioimaging, Histology, and Microfabrication.
The ideal candidate must be an expert in gene expression profiling using qPCR, ddPCR, Nanostring and NGS (RNA-Seq and Single Cell Seq) and have expertise in bioinformatic analysis. They should also have a good working knowledge of general laboratory practices and experience with cell-culture, in-vivo models and working with human samples as well as having a solid understanding of laboratory safety, both practices and regulations. Preference is for those who have a fulsome background in basic tissue, cell culture, protein, and molecular biology techniques.
Key Responsibilities:
· Specialized Equipment Operational Oversight: Manage the daily operations of the Molecular Biology/Genomics facilities, ensuring optimal use of equipment and resources. Maintain high standards of cleanliness and ensure the proper operation and maintenance of specialized equipment including but not limited to Agilent Bioanalyzer, QuantStudio qPCR, BioRad QX200 ddPCR, Illumina 2000K, Automated Liquid Handlers, Chromium X, Nanostring nCounter, Covaris Focused Ultrasonicator
- Routine Equipment Operational Oversight: Together with the Core Facilities team, ensure the proper operation and maintenance of routine equipment including but not limited to gel doc imagers, plate readers, centrifuges, Qubit, Nanodrop, autoclaves, glasswashers, electroporators
- Technical Expertise: Provide consultation and expert guidance on gene expression profiling using bioanalysis, qPCR, ddPCR, Nanostring and NGS (i.e. whole transcriptome bulk and single cell seq). Support the design, execution, bioinformatics analysis and troubleshooting of scientific experiments, ensuring the use of proper techniques and safety procedures
- Resource Management: Collaborate on Institutional grant applications and equipment procurement to meet the research community's needs. Anticipate and adapt to emerging techniques and technologies to maintain a competitive edge
- Representation: Act as a representative of KRCBS on Institutional committees, professional organizations, community outreach, and development events. Engage in professional development to stay abreast of industry trends
- PhD or a minimum of a M.Sc. degree with at least 7 years of recent lab experience
- Significant hands-on experience in wet bench medical research, including handling of biohazardous materials
- Advanced knowledge and experience with Genomics and Molecular Biology techniques with preference given to those with significant sequencing (bulk and single cell) and analysis experience
- Good level of knowledge of a wide range of scientific laboratory equipment and techniques including (but not exclusive to) nucleic acid purification and QC, spectrophotometric analysis, cloning, molecular biology procedures, ultracentrifugation, purification of proteins, ELISA assays, multiplex assays, gel documentation, bacterial transformation and growth, viral vectors, Western blot analysis, promoter assays, cell culture and in-vivo models
