About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Support Counsellor to join our team at the Provincial and Demonstration Schools Branch. As a Support Counsellor, you will play a vital role in providing support and guidance to students with visual impairments, ensuring they receive the best possible education and care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide supervision, guidance, and intervention to students with visual impairments in a school setting.
  • Plan, organize, and implement customized individual and group programs to meet the personal, social, emotional, and developmental needs of students with visual impairments.
  • Supervise, guide, and instruct students with visual impairments.
  • Provide sound physical care and maintain a safe and secure environment for students in the student lodging program.
Requirements
  • Post-secondary educational certificate and/or equivalent training, education, and working experience in a childcare-related field.
  • Current certification in Standard First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Defensive driving and Behaviour Management Systems (BMS) certification.
  • Experience working with students with visual impairments.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate effective individualized developmental, social, and life skill programs to meet the needs of students with visual impairments.
  • Knowledge of orientation and mobility needs of students with visual impairments.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, procedures, guidelines, and practices that address student care and safety.
  • Excellent communication skills to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and other professionals.
  • Sound judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds to assist with student transfers.
  • Willingness and ability to work shifts.
