Tailings Supervisor Job Description

About the Role

Hudbay Minerals Inc. is seeking a highly skilled Tailings Supervisor to join our team at the Copper Mountain Mine in Princeton, BC. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and productive supervision of tailings placement, coordination of workforce, and effective scheduling to meet quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure work is carried out in accordance with the tailings management facilities' OMS manual.
  • Lead and coordinate production with maintenance and technical teams to deliver safe production.
  • Ensure work is undertaken in compliance with mining regulations and the Mine site's safety, quality, and environmental standards and procedures.
  • Assist in creating and implementing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Job Hazard Assessments (JHA), and participate in Health & Safety initiatives.
  • Coordinate and schedule activities of employees, ensuring shift staffing requirements are met.
  • Carry out workplace and TMF inspections on a regular basis.
  • Identify, investigate, correct, and document potential work problems and health, safety, and environmental issues.
  • Establish methods to meet work schedules and coordinate work activities with other departments.
  • Provide information for production plans to ensure production objectives are met.
  • Review and report to Tailings Superintendent on tailings equipment to seek efficiency improvements.
  • Contribute to developing methods, tools, and parts to minimize downtime.
  • Monitor and report on equipment component wear and tear, requisitioning materials and supplies.
  • Supervise and participate in the execution of equipment maintenance plans in the Mill.
  • Ensure all preventive and predictive maintenance plans are planned and scheduled via a computerized maintenance management system.
  • Ensure update of the database for maintenance activities of all work performed.
  • Provide reports on maintenance activities and equipment performance.
  • Participate in interviewing, hiring, training, and developing employees to retain and develop the best talent for the Company.
  • Manage performance by setting expectations, conducting performance reviews, providing feedback, and coaching to achieve business plans and production goals.
  • Identify training opportunities to provide depth and versatility for employees in the team and train staff in production methods, safety procedures, and company policies.
  • Promote a positive employee environment to ensure a continuation of a solid working relationship with all employees.
  • Organize and schedule activities of certified trades, labourers, and contractors' employees, when required.
  • Support coordination and execution of the mill shutdowns.
  • Enforce housekeeping standards in all areas of responsibility.

Requirements

  • Expertise in production and/or maintenance strategies for large-scale, continuous operating mineral processing plants and/or tailings management facilities.
  • Considered attributes for this role are: Ten (10) years of mill/crusher operations experience with at least three (3) years of which should be in a supervisory capacity, coupled with a proven track record of successfully leading a team in an industrial environment.
  • OR Five plus (5+) years of experience in a maintenance role, together with a strong understanding of maintenance process improvements and control strategies.
  • OR Bachelor's degree in mining, metallurgy, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experiences.
  • Current BC Mine Supervisor Certificate or the ability to obtain certification within 3 months of being awarded the position.
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office productivity suite, including experience with computerized control and operating systems.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and have access to personal transportation.

Working Conditions

  • Team environment with regularly scheduled and ad-hoc meetings.
  • Work includes manual dexterity to use desktop computers and peripheral devices.
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous environments with the requirement of wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Frequent exposure to uncomfortable conditions associated with the work environment, such as noise and working in dusty and wet environments.
  • Work requires heavy lifting, awkward positions, walking, and standing.
  • Exceptional exposure to unfavorable working conditions associated with the work environment, such as confined spaces, ladders, and/or rooftops.
  • Work involves pushing, pulling, and moving equipment and/or supplies over 50 pounds.
  • Job requires to be clean-shaven.

Salary Range

$120K - $134K / annum.
