Role Overview

The Deaf Education Specialist plays a vital role in facilitating communication among students who are deaf or hard of hearing, their peers, classroom teachers, and other school personnel. This position involves providing interpreting and support services, tutoring, and active participation in the school's educational team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Communication Facilitation: Serve as a communication facilitator by providing expressive and voice interpreting for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in general education classes.
  • Tutoring and Review Services: Under the direction of the classroom teacher, provide tutoring/review services as necessary without interrupting interpreting tasks.
  • Note-Taking Services: Assist with the setup of note-taking services for students when required.
  • Educational Team Participation: Actively participate in educational team activities, including team meetings, IEP conferences, and informal staffings, providing valuable input on communication strategies.
Required Qualifications
  • Language Proficiency: Proficiency in American Sign Language, Manually Coded English, Pidgin Signed English, and/or Oral Interpreting.
  • Communication Skills: Strong communication skills to effectively liaise between students, peers, and staff.
  • Confidentiality and Professional Standards: Ability to maintain confidentiality and uphold professional standards as delineated in the Code of Ethics of the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
  • Liaison Services: Ability to serve as a liaison between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their hearing peers, staff, and faculty members.
About the Role

This is a full-time position with a salary range of $60,000 - $80,000 per year, depending on experience. The ideal candidate will have previous experience in an educational setting and familiarity with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and team meeting participation.
