Legal Aid Alberta is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Bail Lawyer to join our team in our Calgary office. As a key member of our Justice of the Peace Bail team, you will be responsible for providing exceptional representation to clients in bail hearings, ensuring their rights are protected and their interests are represented.
Key Responsibilities- Duty Counsel Representation: Provide professional representation to clients in bail hearings, adhering to the Rules and Code of Conduct of the Law Society of Alberta and the policies and procedures of Legal Aid Alberta.
- Client Support: Assist clients with Justice of the Peace bail applications, negotiate release conditions and plea arrangements with Crown counsel, and represent clients at bail hearings.
- Statistical Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and complete statistical records of client interactions and case outcomes.
- Compliance and Teamwork: Ensure compliance with office policies and procedures, and participate in performance and staff meetings as required.
- Education and Experience: Law degree from a recognized law school, active membership in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta, and a minimum of 2 years of criminal law experience.
- Knowledge and Skills: Demonstrated understanding of the Law of Bail in Canada, alternative dispute resolution and negotiation skills, excellent understanding of court procedures and processes, and a high level of comfort working with remote court appearances and technology.

The Justice of the Peace Bail team follows a rotational shift schedule, with 6 working days on and 3 days off, including a rotational night shift. This schedule allows for a balance of work and personal life, while also ensuring that our clients receive the support they need 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
