Job Summary

This position is responsible for providing high-quality interpretation services to support the educational and communication needs of Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf-blind students at Vancouver Community College.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide interpretation services during lectures, labs, tests, field trips, and other educational activities.
  • Explain the interpreter's role to administrators, instructors, and staff.
  • Utilize student feedback to make necessary adjustments to interpretation services.
  • Prepare for assignments by obtaining required materials and resources.
  • Demonstrate professional boundaries and good interpersonal skills when working with students and staff.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with students, interpreters, and college staff.
  • Provide insight on communication strategies to the Interpreting Services Department Supervisor and other team members.
  • Assist with departmental duties as required.
Qualifications
  • Completion of Grade 12 and a recognized Interpreter Training Program.
  • At least three years' experience in interpreting ASL, contact varieties, and oral interpreting in an educational setting.
  • Incumbents with the provincial Postsecondary Screen and Written Test of Knowledge are preferred.
  • Membership in the Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters is required.
  • Excellent sign language skills, knowledge of Deaf culture, and appreciation of issues facing Deaf, hard of hearing, and Deaf-blind students.
  • Clear understanding of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation, ethics, and best practices in the field.
  • Proficiency in the use of email, MS Word, MS ACCESS, internet, videophones, and other communication technology used by Deaf people.
Skills and Abilities
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively as a team member.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
