Clinical Leadership and Expertise

The Medical Director, Colposcopy, provides clinical leadership and expertise to Island Health and the Cervix Screening Program. This position works collaboratively with operational leadership and clinical leadership to support the development and implementation of standards, guidelines, and indicators for cervix screening and follow-up care.

Main Responsibilities

  • Co-leads and oversees activities to ensure program service delivery is efficient, effective, and integrated across Island Health sites.
  • Establishes processes and structures to engage physicians and staff in continuous quality improvement of service delivery.
  • Monitors program budget and performance jointly with co-leader and makes course corrections when necessary.
  • Ensures appropriate investigation and resolution of program-related Patient Safety Learning System and Patient Care Quality Office events.
  • Oversees activities that advance technology and data use to improve service delivery using the Electronic Health Records (EHR) in collaboration with the Quality Systems team.
  • Assesses, monitors, and anticipates program resource needs and works with medical leaders and administrative leaders to prioritize these needs within available resources.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Actively participates in the development, updating, and dissemination of provincial standards and guidelines for cervix screening and follow-up.
  • Assists in the development of colposcopy-related quality indicators and monitors outcomes for the region.
  • Communicates outcome results across the region, as appropriate, and works with administrative leads to identify areas of concern and contributing factors and to implement corrective actions.
  • Supports the training of colposcopists in the region, including reviewing and discussing certification exam results, providing on-site training, and reviewing log books.
  • Leads quality improvement initiatives for colposcopy at a regional level, acting as a resource and liaison for colposcopy clinic staff and other colposcopists.
  • Participates in the Provincial Cervix Screening Program Quality Management Committee.
  • Supports performance management and completes clinical performance reviews, participating in medical audits, peer reviews, and incident reviews as necessary.
  • Participates in the planning of annual colposcopy education sessions, identifying learning needs, speakers, and methods to convey practice changes and new developments in colposcopy.
  • Supports the engagement of primary care providers by providing education sessions on cervix screening and follow-up and acting as a resource for local Divisions of Family Practice or individual providers.
  • Participates in the projection of service requirements for cervix screening and downstream clinical services, working with regional administrative leads to determine operational planning and changes that may be required.
  • Provides clinical review and advice for promotional and health provider education materials as requested.
