Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Laboratory Assistant Technician to join our team at Lakeridge Health. As a Laboratory Assistant Technician, you will be responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to laboratory specimen collection, processing, and testing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collect blood samples from adults, children, and neonates, following proper procedures as outlined in the laboratory manual.
- Perform ECGs and ensure quality control, maintenance, and troubleshooting of urinalysis and other laboratory instrumentation.
- Receive and prepare specimens for analysis, and prepare specimens for send-out to reference laboratories.
- Book appointments and register patients, and perform urinalysis testing.
- Ensure the cleanliness of equipment in the immediate work area and participate in the student training program, as required.
- Immediately report any unusual incidents involving patients that occur in the performance of duties, and follow established safety and infection control procedures.
Requirements:
- Medical Laboratory Assistant certificate from a recognized training facility (in good standing).
- MLPAO (OSMT) and/or CSMLS Laboratory Assistant certification required.
- Recent experience in a central receiving role and the procedures involved in this area is required.
- Proven previous Laboratory Assistant, phlebotomy, and ECG experience in a hospital or medical laboratory setting.
- Proven effective organizational, prioritization, and time-management abilities.
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proven strong team player abilities with the proficiencies to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Knowledge of infection control principles and practices.
- Physically able to perform duties of lifting, bending, sitting, and prolonged standing and walking.
- Ability to work in a high-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
- Proven knowledge of Microsoft computer programs/keyboarding experience.
- Experience with pneumatic tube transport systems, an asset.
- Current Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Certification, preferred.
- Must have a satisfactory performance record.

- Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to Lakeridge Health's comprehensive safety programs and practices, including staff, patient, and environmental safety, and participation in regular in-service education in this area.
Conditions of Employment:
- The terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the Collective Agreement between the Hospital and OPSEU Local 348.
