Job Summary

The Assistant Medical Examiner is a critical role within the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, reporting directly to the Chief Medical Examiner. This position is responsible for conducting forensic autopsies and external body examinations to determine the cause and manner of death statewide.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform forensic autopsies and external body examinations to determine the cause and manner of death.
  • Review reports of death received from hospitals, police agencies, and private physicians to determine jurisdiction of cases.
  • Communicate with family, friends, and/or associates of decedents as necessary to clarify unclear points and obtain background information.
  • Conduct on-site investigations at the death scene to gather data and information surrounding the case.
  • Direct the activities of forensic investigators in photographing and removing the decedent and the work of autopsy room support personnel during the examination.
  • Conduct microscopic examinations of specimens, tissues, organs, fluid, blood, etc. to determine irregular conditions that might have contributed to death.
  • Prepare reports and findings and furnish them to law enforcement officials, including evidence of a medical/scientific nature that might be needed for criminal involvement.
  • Work with hospitals, health care agencies, law enforcement, and criminal justice agencies, as well as private physicians.
  • Review current literature in the area of forensic pathology and investigative research and examine prior case histories for background information.
  • Prepare certificates of death and determine the release of bodies and cremation. Testify in courts of law as required.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess an Anatomic Pathology Certification or eligibility for certification, a Delaware Physician M.D. or Delaware Physician D.O. license or eligibility for a Delaware license, and three years of experience in forensic pathology.
