Job Summary
The Assistant Medical Examiner is a critical role within the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner at DelDOT. This position requires a high level of expertise in forensic pathology, with a strong focus on performing autopsies and external body examinations to determine the cause and manner of death.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough autopsies and external body examinations to gather data and information surrounding a case.
- Review reports of death received from hospitals, police agencies, and private physicians to determine jurisdiction.
- Communicate with family, friends, and associates of decedents to clarify unclear points and obtain background information.
- Conduct on-site investigations at the death scene to gather data and information.
- Direct the activities of forensic investigators and autopsy room support personnel.
- Conduct microscopic examinations of specimens, tissues, organs, fluid, blood, etc. to determine irregular conditions.
- Prepare and furnish reports and findings to law enforcement officials.
- Work with hospitals, health care agencies, law enforcement, and private physicians.
- Stay up-to-date with current literature in forensic pathology and investigative research.
Requirements
- Possession of an Anatomic Pathology Certification or eligibility for certification.
- Possession of a Delaware Physician M.D. or Delaware Physician D.O. license or eligibility for a Delaware license.
- Three years experience in forensic pathology.
