Job Title: Legal Officer

As a Legal Officer with the Canadian Armed Forces, you will play a critical role in delivering legal services in various fields, including operational law, international law, training, military personnel law, and military justice.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide advice on international and domestic law to commanders of deployed forces
  • Offer general legal advice and services to commanding officers of Canadian Armed Forces bases
  • Provide advice on operational legal issues at National Defence Headquarters
  • Participate in Canadian delegations negotiating international treaties
  • Deliver training on military law and military justice
Work Environment:

As a Legal Officer, you will work in various settings, including courtroom and administrative environments. You will be a legal advisor to the chain of command and an expert in international and domestic law applicable to Canadian Armed Forces operations and military discipline.

International Deployments:

When deployed overseas, Legal Officers take on responsibilities such as working with Canadian and allied forces, local officials, and international organizations like the United Nations.

Professional Development:

As a Legal Officer, you will have the opportunity to write legal opinions that go directly to the Chain of Command, who value your advice. You will also have the chance to participate in international operations and work with a team similar to a medium-sized civilian law firm.

Requirements:
  • Admitted to the Bar of a Canadian province or territory
  • Member in good standing of a provincial or territorial law society
  • Graduated from law school within the last two years or have practiced law on a full-time basis in Canada since graduation

Basic training and military officer qualification training are required before being assigned. If you have the ability and desire to do something different, to serve Canada, and to do something both deeply challenging and rewarding, then becoming a Legal Officer in the Canadian Armed Forces may just be the right move for you.
