About the Role
The Second Year Apprentice Welder will be responsible for using various welding processes and tools to produce precision parts and construct Powell Canada products.
Key Responsibilities
- Fitting up weldments according to mechanical engineered drawings and product specifications.
- Working with small hand tools, clamps, and grinders to fit up and weld structural steel or sheet metal products.
- Producing a variety of products to meet dimensional specifications of mechanical engineered drawings.
- Determining where each weld is to be performed and meeting size and length requirements within given tolerance.
- Measuring and marking sheet metal according to drawings or templates.
- Meeting cosmetic or appearance specifications, which may require grinding welds and sheet metal buffing.
- Operating metalworking machines to cut, punch, drill, shape, or straighten sheet metal.
- Grinding and buffing seams, joints, and rough surfaces.
- Performing light maintenance on welding and cutting equipment, small power tools, and fume extractors.
- Maintaining cleanliness of work area and meeting Powell Quality System requirements.
- Performing light maintenance on welding equipment, such as replacing contact tips and nozzles, liners, and entire weld gun assemblies.
- Operating plasma cutters and cutting materials using power tools or by hand.
- Participating in Powell's ongoing Safety Training.
- Promoting a safety culture and attending all safety meetings.
- Ensuring quality by following standard work instructions and identifying potential risks to product quality.
- Ensuring work areas remain clean and well organized.
Requirements
- Minimum education level of a High School diploma.
- Completion of 2nd year in a Welding program.
- Registered Apprentice with AIT (or other provincial programs).
- CWB Certification is considered an asset, preferably FCAW S-classification all position.
- Structural steel fabrication experience is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with MES (Manufacturing and Execution System).
- Safety certifications are an asset for the position.
- CSTS 2020 will be required before start date.
- Due to the safety-sensitive nature of this position, successful candidates will undergo pre-employment substance abuse and medical testing upon hire.
Working Conditions
- Safety-sensitive position in a temperature-controlled manufacturing or industrial environment with occasional outside activities.
- Required to wear personnel protective equipment at all times (hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, safety harnesses, and respirators) when required.
- Must be able to work from all types of ladders (step ladders, "A" frame ladders, and all-size extension ladders).
- Working around loud machinery.
Physical Requirements
- Able to maintain body equilibrium and agility to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, ascending or descending stairs.
- Bending the body at the waist, the legs at the knees, and extending arms and hands in any direction in a repetitive manner continuously.
- Continuous standing, walking 50-300 foot distances for long periods of time with only occasional sitting.
- Able to lift up to 10-20lbs frequently throughout the shift and occasionally 50lbs.
- Able to frequently look over shoulders, work with both arms above shoulders, and use both arms at full length frequently.
- Using upper extremities to apply or exert a force continuously up to 20lbs throughout the shift and occasionally 100lbs.
- Typing, punching, or applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm.
- Perceiving size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with the fingertips.
