Job Title: Support Staff - Special Needs Assistant

This is a casual/on-call position for short-term assignments. You must be available at least 3 days per week.

Assignments are in schools located across the Toronto District School Board.

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for supervising students with developmental disabilities during the lunch period.

Supervision and assistance are tailored to the individual needs of each student and reinforce the student's educational program.

These students have high-risk and complex needs, and have very limited abilities to direct their own physical care or to advocate for themselves.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist with student feeding, preparation of lunch, table manners, cutlery use, self-feeding, proper chewing/swallowing
  • Supervise and assist in the clean-up of the lunch area and assist students in personal hygiene and grooming activities
  • Toilet students of all ages, including lifting and transferring, washing, diapering, changing clothes, etc.
  • Assist the special education teacher(s) in addressing and meeting the physical safety needs of students, e.g., BMS techniques, behavior shaping, prompting strategies, proximity control, etc.
Requirements:
  • Completion of Grade 10
  • Three months related experience supervising children with special needs, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to use adaptive equipment (e.g., wheelchair operation, walkers)
