Circulation and Support Services

At Camosun College, we are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Library Assistant to join our team. As a key member of our library operations, you will be responsible for providing exceptional customer service to students, faculty, and staff. Your primary duties will include checking out and checking in library materials, answering user inquiries, and performing renewals, holds, and updates. You will also be responsible for retrieving and preparing items for delivery, receiving payment for fines and processing charges, and operating a cash register. Additionally, you will assist in developing public services procedures, alerting the supervisor to problems or potential problems, and answering directional questions. You will also be responsible for maintaining the physical order of the collection by shelving and shelf reading, and directing student aides performing this work.

College Identification

You will be responsible for performing all duties related to issuing college identification, including taking photographs, printing cards, and updating cards. You will also explain UPass and identification policies to card recipients and liaise with Student Services when necessary.

Facility and Security Duties

You will be responsible for opening and closing library facilities, monitoring security gates, and responding to alarms sounded when materials are removed without using appropriate checkout procedures. You will also respond to security and emergency situations according to established procedures and guidelines.

Technical Services

You will be responsible for physically discarding library materials identified for discarding by a librarian, assisting in the acquisitions function, and organizing the processing of materials for cataloguing. You will also process new or added material, including label printing and laminating, and mending damaged or worn items.

Overdues, Claims & Returned Services

You will be responsible for running overdue reports, checking shelves for materials which were not returned correctly, and printing and mailing letters for overdue materials. You will also flag patrons in the Registration system and ensure a corresponding note is placed on patron's circulation record.

Serials

You will be responsible for checking in serials as they arrive, alerting the Acquisition/Serials Technician of claims for issues not received, and maintaining periodicals and newspaper shelving.

Reserves

You will be responsible for receiving requests from faculty and librarians to place items on reserves, checking databases and other sources for digital copy of requested item or locating the requested materials in the collection. You will also create a reserve record for e-reserves, copying print articles and physically processing into folders, and checking textbook lists for potential items for the reserve collection.

Library Operations Support

You will be responsible for departmental mail distribution, maintaining bulletin boards and displays, maintaining appropriate files, compiling and keeping statistical records as directed, and performing routine print interlibrary tasks.

Qualifications

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual with a high school graduation and one year of post-secondary education, including some coursework toward a Library Technician diploma and two years of library experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. You must have excellent keyboarding skills and an understanding of computer concepts and terminology, and experience with word processing software and file management systems. You must also be able to perform basic troubleshooting of equipment and communicate effectively and professionally with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the general public.
