Canada Labour Market Information Council (LMIC) | Conseil de l'information sur le marché du travail (CIMT) Full time

About Us

The Labour Market Information Council (LMIC) | Conseil de l'information sur le marché du travail (CIMT) is a team of passionate and skilled professionals striving to strengthen the pan-Canadian ecosystem of labour market information to meet the evolving and diverse needs of Canadians. Our mission is to empower Canadians to make informed decisions by enabling access to quality, relevant, comprehensive data and insights across the pan-Canadian LMI ecosystem.

Our work is performed in the context of a rapidly changing labour market ecosystem, including evolving government/stakeholder needs and products, the availability of high-frequency 'big data,' and the growth of private sector LMI providers. We must be informed by valid, up-to-date, relevant, and accurate information that reflects the dynamic nature of these factors and their associated interactions.

We are guided through engagement with federal, provincial and territorial governments, intermediary service organizations, academic researchers and private sector partnerships.

Job Description

As a Chief Labour Market Information Specialist, you will contribute to various labour market-related projects related to skilled trades, labour market imbalances and skill alignment, among other topics. You will lead research projects, develop robust methodologies, execute data analyses and interpretation, and work with our leadership to craft strong narrative reports that align with our mandate and role in the LMI ecosystem.

You will also be comfortable embracing mixed methods in a given project where necessary and work collaboratively with qualitative researchers to produce strong evidence for a given policy area where needed.

The writing component of this position includes the ability to communicate complex concepts to a range of audiences and working with the Director of Communications to help shape the content of written work to the specific targeted audience.

The data analysis component of this position includes obtaining, processing, and exploring labour market data from various official and unofficial data sources. You will know or learn to conduct data analytical work using R/RStudio to produce engaging, meaningful, and accurate data visualizations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Understand the relative value of various datasets pertaining to labour markets and how various components can help fulfill end-user needs.
  • Apply problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity, organizational, design, and interpersonal skills in the context of a multifaceted and fast-moving project.
  • Effectively clean disparate data sources and link structured results within new metadata schemas.
  • Work independently and establish priorities that meet organizational deadlines.
  • Effectively collaborate with other parts of LMIC to ensure alignment of deliverables, including reports, data visualizations, presentations, etc.
  • Adaptable to changing organizational needs.
  • Provide recommendations for improving research methods, research tools and information products to ensure the alignment of high-quality approaches.

Qualifications and Knowledge Domains

A master's degree in computer science, economics, or other data-driven field. Other combinations of education and work experience will be considered.

Demonstrate success in inventing innovative and user-friendly products.

Help drive transformation by continuously looking for ways to automate existing processes and testing and optimize data quality.

Experience working with cloud computing systems (GCP).

Strong programming skills and expert knowledge of algorithms and data structures (R or Python preferred).

Compensation and Benefits

This position provides a competitive total rewards package that aligns with the skills and competencies of the individual, including extended health coverage, flexible work/life policies, vacation, sick and personal leave and retirement benefits.

The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $100,000, commensurate with the candidate's experience and qualifications.
