Utility Accounting Intern

Job Summary:

The Utility Accounting Intern will assist in the management and validation of utility data and monthly financial reporting as it pertains to the assigned utility. This role will provide support to the Accounting Manager in processing utility bills, reviewing batches, and releasing them into the system. The successful candidate will also be responsible for generating monthly utility files, coordinating with the Utility consultant, and reconciling annual utility contracts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Process utility bills and review batches to ensure accuracy of payee, amount, cheque date, consumption, and charges.
  • Validate property address, invoice amounts, and rate charges.
  • Liaise with utility companies on late payment charges and other billing issues.
  • Coordinate with Property Accounting team on tenant charge backs, where applicable.
  • Generate monthly utility files and send to Utility consultant for assessment of required monthly accruals.
  • Work with Property Accounting team on billing issues.
  • Assist in developing internal reporting and quarterly reports.
  • Correspond and resolve any issues with the data provided by the Consultant on a monthly basis.
  • Reconcile annual Utility contracts.
  • Validate and recommend volumes for renewing utility contracts, where applicable.

Requirements:

  • In progress or completed College diploma or University degree in Accounting or Business.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines, multi-task, and prioritize.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written.
  • Must have strong working knowledge of MS Excel.
  • SAP experience would be an asset.
