Join the Government of Saskatchewan as an Area Forester and contribute to the management of Saskatchewan's forest resources.
About the RoleThe Area Forester will lead a team of operations staff responsible for regulating forest industry operations and ensuring compliance on Crown Forest lands. This includes reviewing and approving forest industry operating plans, overseeing compliance, and leading public consultations with stakeholders, First Nations, and Métis communities.
Key Responsibilities- Lead a team of operations staff to regulate forest industry operations and ensure compliance on Crown Forest lands.
- Review and approve forest industry operating plans to authorize the harvest of forest products.
- Oversee compliance within the Prince Albert Area, including field investigations and responses.
- Lead public consultations with stakeholders, First Nations, and Métis communities.
- Provide forest policy direction and forest management expertise to other branches and government ministries.
- Work with other resource management specialists to develop solutions aligned with the Ministry's ecosystem management principles.
- Demonstrated ability to guide, develop, and coach a diverse group of employees.
- Knowledge of principles related to ecosystem-based forest management and legislation related to the utilization and administration of forest resources.
- Knowledge of harvesting, road construction and decommissioning, water crossing installation and reclamation, and boreal forest silviculture.
- Knowledge of process and policy development, and the strategic planning process.
- Knowledge of compliance and enforcement theories, including natural resource law principles.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, facilitate, and lead public consultation processes with a variety of stakeholders and First Nations and Métis communities.
- Fieldwork year-round and travel throughout Saskatchewan, including remote locations and overnight stays away from home.
- Operation of a 4-wheel drive pick-up truck and all-terrain vehicles in off-road conditions.
A degree in forestry, combined with significant forest industry or government forestry agency experience with forest operations, is required. A valid driver's license and eligibility for registration as a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) with the Association of Saskatchewan Forestry Professionals within 3 years of commencement are also required.
This is a permanent, full-time position with a salary range of $41.174-$51.598 per hour. The successful candidate will work 37.33 hours per week, averaged over 4 weeks.
