We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Education Assistant to join our team at School District #62 (Sooke). As an Education Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with diverse needs, including those with autism, behavior disorders, and learning disabilities.
Key Responsibilities:- Support students in a variety of classrooms, including those with students with autism, behavior disorders, and learning disabilities.
- Implement adapted or modified curriculum, as needed, to support student learning.
- Prepare visual supports and implement low-tech communication systems to facilitate student communication.
- Implement augmentative and alternative communication systems to support student communication.
- Assist students with daily living skills, including feeding, dressing, toileting, and mobility.
- Implement daily exercise programs under the direction of an occupational therapist or physiotherapist.
- Support students' academic goals and objectives.
- Participate in the planning and implementation of Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals, objectives, and supports.
- Supervise students during classroom activities, on the playground, and on field trips.
- Assist students with transitioning between activities in and outside the school building.
- Support social inclusion in the classroom and on the playground through implementing self-regulation strategies, behavior support strategies, communication strategies, and monitoring behavior.
- Objectively observe and record student behavior, as required.
- Report safety, unusual behavior, and discipline concerns to the principal or designate.
- May support personal care needs of students, including glucagon testing, toileting, and feeding.
- May be required to physically assist students using lifts and transfers.
- May be required to support transferring students on and off buses.
- Remain current in school, district, and provincial policies and guidelines relevant to the role.
- Secondary school graduation or equivalent.
- Education Assistant Certification or equivalent in a related field or equivalent experience working with individuals with disabilities, behavior disorders, learning and physical disabilities, syndromes, and disorders that affect student learning.
- Minimum three (3) months of experience working with children.
- Knowledge and understanding of child development.
- Familiarity with Individual Education Plans and Individual Care Plans, an asset.
- Ability to implement modified and adapted curriculum.
- Basic computer skills, including the ability to read and form emails, view Word/Excel documents, navigate the internet, and use web-based applications.
- Physical ability to respond to student needs, including bolting.
- Demonstrates patience and acceptance when dealing with students.
- Shows kindness and cares about the well-being of students.
- Actively shows courtesy and respect to all, proactively builds healthy and trusting relationships with all, and contributes to a positive working environment.
- Clearly articulates thoughts and ideas and shares timely and relevant information openly, honestly, and respectfully using oral, written, and visual formats.
- Possesses strong organizational skills and proactively plans, prioritizes, and organizes work.
- Respects the confidential nature of all information relating to students, parents, and staff.
