Job Title: Education Assistant

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Education Assistant to join our team at Dunsmuir Middle School. As an Education Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with diverse needs, including those with autism, behavior disorders, and learning disabilities.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support students in various classrooms, including those with autism and behavior disorders
  • Implement adapted and modified curriculum as needed
  • Prepare visual supports and implement low-tech communication systems
  • Facilitate daily living skills, including feeding, dressing, toileting, and mobility
  • Implement daily exercise programs under the direction of an occupational therapist or physiotherapist
  • Monitor and record student behavior, as required
  • Report safety concerns and discipline issues to the principal or designate
  • Support personal care needs of students, including glucagon testing, toileting, and feeding
  • Physically assist students using lifts and transfers, as needed
Requirements:
  • Secondary school graduation or equivalent
  • Education Assistant Certification or equivalent experience working with individuals with disabilities
  • Minimum three months of experience working with children
  • Knowledge and understanding of child development
  • Familiarity with Individual Education Plans and Individual Care Plans, an asset
Skills and Abilities:
  • Demonstrates patience and acceptance when dealing with students
  • Shows kindness and cares about the well-being of students
  • Clearly articulates thoughts and ideas and shares timely and relevant information openly, honestly, and respectfully
  • Possesses strong organizational skills and proactively plans, prioritizes, and organizes work
Working Conditions:

This is a thirty-hour per week position, with all instructional days from September to June. The successful candidate will be required to work in a fast-paced environment, supporting students with diverse needs.
