About the Opportunity

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Medical Laboratory Assistant to join our team at the Nova Scotia Health Authority. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting the pre and post-analytical phases of testing in our laboratory.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform various functions relating to specimen procurement, receipt, and processing, including data entry, media preparation, sterilization, and clerical duties.
  • Load specimens on an analyzer and perform troubleshooting activities as needed.
  • Manage supplies, maintain accurate records, and ensure compliance with safety and infection prevention and control procedures.
  • Interact with various stakeholders, including patients, healthcare professionals, and laboratory staff.
  • Work independently, use good judgment, and maintain a professional appearance.
About You

We are looking for a candidate with a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or equivalent, and current registration with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS). The ideal candidate will possess strong written and verbal communication skills, basic understanding of medical terminology, and manual dexterity to handle sharp instruments and small objects.

The successful candidate will be able to perform procedures with a high degree of accuracy, accurately number and label specimens, and adapt to updates and changes in operating procedures. Basic computer skills, including experience with Meditech, are preferred. Access to reliable transportation is also required, as travel may be necessary.

Hours and Compensation

This is a permanent, full-time position with 75 hours bi-weekly. The hourly rate is $23.19 - $26.27, and successful candidates may be eligible for our benefits package, which includes health, dental, travel, long-term disability, and life insurance coverage, as well as a defined benefit pension plan.
