Nursing Role Overview
In line with the standards of the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM), and in partnership with the interdisciplinary care team at Fraser Health, the Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse delivers psychiatric nursing care services to patients in tertiary and older adult settings. This role focuses on providing person-centered and recovery-oriented care to individuals experiencing serious mental health and bio-psychosocial problems. The clinical leader demonstrates expertise in evidence-based practices through direct care activities, prioritizing tasks, and assigning/delegating responsibilities to support staff.
Key Responsibilities
The Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates nursing care for assigned clients, including reviewing client history, conducting physical and psychosocial assessments, monitoring medical and psychiatric conditions, and providing education to individuals and their support systems. The professional identifies actual or potential problems and strengths through nursing diagnosis, develops interventions, and evaluates outcomes. This role also involves developing, implementing, evaluating, and documenting psycho-social rehabilitative plans in collaboration with the client's support systems and the interdisciplinary team.
Clinical Practice
The Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse facilitates individual and group treatment sessions using cognitive, behavioral, educational, problem-solving, and crisis intervention methods. This role involves providing individual supportive counseling to clients and families in accordance with approved treatment methods, promoting person-centered care that demonstrates empathy and sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences. The clinical leader educates clients and families about topics essential to their health care and well-being, prioritizing tasks, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary care team.
Qualifications and Skills
The ideal candidate holds a graduation from an approved School of Nursing, with one year of recent related mental health experience in an acute, tertiary, or community setting. The candidate must be a current practicing registered nurse and/or registered psychiatric nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). This role requires the ability to complete initial and ongoing mental health and substance use client assessments, provide nursing care through appropriate technical, therapeutic, and safety interventions, and communicate effectively verbally and in writing with clients, families, and the care team.

Education and Experience

This role may require completion of a substance use certificate program and a valid Class 5 BC Driver's License and access to a personal vehicle with appropriate insurance coverage.

The Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse must have working knowledge of mental illness and substance use treatment, psychosocial rehabilitation, and recovery principles. This role requires skills in crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies, suicide risk assessment, violence management protocols, general counseling and interview techniques, and individual and group dynamics. The candidate must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with clients, families, and the care team, promoting person-centered care that demonstrates empathy and sensitivity to diverse cultures and preferences.
