Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Sign Language Interpreter to provide access and support for students who are Deaf and/or hard of hearing in our educational settings. The successful candidate will facilitate communication between students and staff, and provide interpretation services to ensure equal access to education.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation services to students in regular classrooms and school settings.
  • Access the Ontario Curriculum during instructional time and facilitate communication in and around the school environment.
  • Proactively support the school team to maintain an inclusive learning environment for Deaf students.
  • Assist with implementation of instructional, environmental, and assessment accommodations.
  • Identify opportunities for students to expand their ASL vocabulary based on curriculum content.
  • Provide ASL Interpreting services upon request of the school team.
  • Attend and contribute to meetings as required.
Requirements
  • Minimum three (3) year College Diploma in ASL-English Interpreting.
  • Active membership in good standing with the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) is an asset.
  • Demonstrated expressive and receptive ASL skills.
  • Demonstrated expressive and receptive spoken and written English skills.
  • Experience working as an interpreter with school-aged children.
  • Knowledge of the basic principles of educational practices, the function of support services, and the role of interpreters as part of the students' educational team.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote equitable and inclusive education for all students, and advocate for equity-deserving groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to the CASLI Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct.
Benefits
  • $27.11 per hour - Level 5 of ESSP Collective Agreement.
  • 35 Hours per week, 10 months per year.
