Job Title: Sign Language Interpreter

We are seeking a highly skilled Sign Language Interpreter to join our team at the Avon Maitland District School Board. The successful candidate will provide American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation services to support students who are Deaf and/or hard of hearing in our educational settings.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide ASL interpretation services to students in regular classrooms and school settings
  • Facilitate communication between students, teachers, and other school staff
  • Support the development of inclusive learning environments for Deaf and hard of hearing students
  • Collaborate with teachers and other school staff to implement accommodations and modifications for students
  • Attend meetings and provide interpretation services as required
Requirements:
  • Minimum three (3) year College Diploma in ASL-English Interpreting
  • Active membership in good standing with the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI)
  • Demonstrated expressive and receptive ASL skills
  • Demonstrated expressive and receptive spoken and written English skills
  • Experience working as an interpreter with school-aged children
Preferred Qualifications:
  • University Degree in a related field
  • Knowledge of the basic principles of educational practices and the role of interpreters in educational settings
  • Demonstrated ability to promote equitable and inclusive education for all students
