We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Assistant City Solicitor II to join our team at the City of St. Catharines. As a key member of our Legal Services division, you will provide legal advice and representation to the City and its departments, with a focus on real property law and development.
Key Responsibilities:- Advise and represent the City in all matters of law, preparing legal opinions and providing legal advice to the Director, City Council, and staff.
- Carry out routine and complex real property transactions from negotiation to registration.
- Draft by-laws, procedures, and policy documents.
- Negotiate, draft, and review legal agreements and other legal documents as necessary.
- Consult with outside professionals on general municipal issues and provide instructions to external legal counsel as required.
- Attend City Council and Committee meetings, prepare written reports, and make presentations as required.
- A bachelor's degree and graduation from a recognized University and Law School.
- Law Society of Ontario membership, in good standing.
- Five (5) years of progressive experience practicing law, with a solid base of solicitors' experience in real estate transactions.
- Experience in drafting and reviewing land development agreements, commercial contracts, and corporate law would be an asset.
- Demonstrated attendance/attainment of recent professional development education.
- Well-developed coaching, supervisory, and leadership skills with a proven ability to deal with people sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically, and professionally.
- Excellent communication, research, and report writing skills.
- The ability to work in a team environment, liaison with key external stakeholders, and individuals/departments at all levels of the organization, as well as, function effectively with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work effectively as a member of a team, as well as, demonstrate innovation and accomplishment.
- Ability to work under conditions of strict confidentiality.
- Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software programs and the ability to adapt quickly to applicable software.
- A demonstrated commitment to enhancing a safety culture.
Work Designation: Hybrid
