Museum Lab Technician Position Available

Job Summary

This position is responsible for providing technical expertise and support to the faculty and students in the Applied Museum Studies program at Algonquin College. The incumbent will perform a variety of tasks necessary to ensure the smooth operation of the lab, including setup, modification, and teardown of equipment, as well as conducting skills demonstrations and providing individualized assistance to students.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Laboratory Support
    • Provide technical support to faculty members and students in the Applied Museum Studies program.
    • Demonstrate and enforce safe working habits.
    • Reinforce lab techniques taught by faculty.
    • Orient new and part-time faculty to laboratory procedures.
    • Procure and make available requested equipment and resources for courses and day-to-day functions.
    • Supervise open labs for students.
  • Lab Setup and Maintenance
    • Select, prepare, and assemble apparatus, materials, and specimens/samples for all lab sessions in consultation with faculty.
    • Assist in the tear down of lab stations and general clean up following labs.
    • Assist with set up of materials for delivery of midterm and final practical assessments in consultation with faculty.
  • Maintenance and Inventory
    • Organize and store chemical substances, fluids, and compressed gases according to safety instructions.
    • Maintain and order disposable inventory for all labs in consultation with faculty and Chair.
    • Assemble products using ministry shop/lab requirements, mechanical drawings, and written instructions.
    • Properly set up, calibrate, maintain, operate, and shut down general-purpose and specialized tools, instruments, and equipment used in the program in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.
    • Perform annual inventory of equipment and supplies according to established College procedures.
    • Make recommendations in consultation with faculty for new equipment and materials based on research of current industry trends.
  • Other Duties

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • A minimum three (3) year diploma/degree in Museum Studies, Conservation, Exhibit Preparation, Fine Arts, or equivalent.
  • A minimum three (3) years of experience.
  • Preferably experience in the cultural/movable Heritage sector, and/or in a lab environment related to the position.
  • Hands-on experience with lab setup, modification, and teardown.
  • Proficiency in maintaining, using, and supervising a variety of general-purpose and specialized tools, instruments, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of safe storage and handling of chemical substances, fluids, and compressed gases.
  • Strong understanding of lab safety protocols and procedures.
  • Excellent organizational skills for maintaining and ordering inventory and ensuring safe storage of materials.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve technical issues related to lab equipment and setup.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and learners.
  • Experience working with learners in a classroom/lab setting is an asset.

Anticipated Schedule

In accordance with lab schedule for the term.

This is a nine (9) month position with an annual layoff period of up to three (3) months.

The estimated salary for this position is $38.09-$44.14 per hour, paid at Payband I-Comparator.
