Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Laboratory Assistant, Anatomic Pathology to join our team at PHSA. As a key member of our laboratory team, you will be responsible for providing support to pathologists in gross tissue description and fine needle aspiration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance to pathologists in gross tissue description and fine needle aspiration, ensuring accurate and timely processing of specimens.
  • Accurately label and accession specimens, following established protocols and procedures.
  • Operate laboratory equipment, including tissue processors, stainers, and microscopes, to prepare specimens for examination.
  • Dispose of pathology samples and maintain a clean and organized workspace, adhering to established safety protocols.
  • Prepare specimens and other items for shipment, ensuring accurate labeling and packaging.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, performing routine maintenance and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Monitor and maintain inventory of supplies, ordering and restocking as necessary.
  • Perform daily cleaning and disinfection of work areas and equipment, adhering to established schedules and protocols.
  • Receive and direct telephone and fax requests for information, following established procedures.
  • File and organize reports, requisitions, and other documents, ensuring accurate and timely processing.
  • Enter workload units into the computer system, maintaining accurate records and reports.
  • Provide training and support to new laboratory personnel, ensuring a smooth transition and onboarding process.

Requirements

  • Completion of Grade 12 and successful completion of a recognized Lab Assistant training program, plus one year's recent related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, with strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and reports, with strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment, with a strong understanding of safety protocols and procedures.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position, with a strong commitment to maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
