Estimating Manager Job Description

The Estimating Manager is a key role within The Lignum Group, responsible for overseeing the daily functions of the glazing department. This position requires a strong focus on budgeting and estimating, ensuring that all projects are thoroughly prepared within tight timeframes.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the glazing estimating department, ensuring efficient processes and effective communication with team members.
  • Produce accurate and timely bid estimates and budgets, taking into account the full scope of glazing work.
  • Monitor the progress of each bid, controlling aspects such as escalation, alternates, economies of scale, and market influences.
  • Support the development of value engineering and alternates, ensuring that all projects are optimized for cost and efficiency.
  • Recognize and address team training needs, promoting a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Evaluate new technologies and techniques related to estimating, staying up-to-date with industry developments and best practices.
  • Communicate performance expectations and goals to team members, providing regular feedback and coaching to ensure success.
  • Pursue client relationships, building strong foundations for future growth and collaboration.
  • Hold regular meetings with the department to discuss issues, goals, and performance, ensuring that all team members are aligned and working towards common objectives.
  • Make informed decisions regarding the pursuit of new projects, considering factors such as feasibility, risk, and potential return on investment.
  • Conduct semi-annual performance reviews with team members, providing constructive feedback and guidance to support their growth and development.
  • Organize regular meetings with junior estimators, providing mentorship and support to help them develop their skills and expertise.
  • Approve vacation requests and inform the Vice President of Estimating and Sales of team members' absences.
  • Host meetings with the Vice President to review department performance, discuss challenges, and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Assign mentors to new estimators during their probationary period, ensuring they receive the support and guidance needed to succeed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President or other senior management.

Education and Training:

A graduate degree from a recognized engineering, architectural, or construction management program is an asset. Knowledge of current glass and glazing codes is also essential.

Experience:

At least five years of experience estimating glazing projects, with at least two years in a supervisory role. Proficiency in Bluebeam software and Excel spreadsheet design is required. Ability to use CAD programs is also necessary.
