Technical Engineering Manager – Reactivity Control Units

This role is based in Mississauga, Ontario, and reports to the Director of Reactor Components and Mechanical Engineering Division. The Technical Engineering Manager – Reactory Control Units will work on a new large CANDU design project and laterally report to the Project Technical Director.

The Technical Engineering Manager – Reactivity Control Units will be responsible for all aspects of engineering related to design engineering of reactivity control units for the assigned project.

Your Role within the Team:

  • Providing technical leadership in Reactivity Control Units design engineering, including technical specifications, drawings, design specifications, bill of materials, and design certifications.
  • Providing technical expertise on code and standard requirements, such as CSA N285 and ASME Section III Division 1 pressure boundary requirements.
  • Developing project scope and deliverable definition in compliance with governing contract documents, quality requirements, and customer requirements.
  • Making decisions and recommendations on resourcing requirements and working with functional managers to assign engineering resources.
  • Developing and implementing strategies for outsourcing engineering scope within their scope of responsibility with business partners.
  • Ensuring an appropriate combination of skills and experience is maintained within the project to provide technical leadership and specialized expertise.
  • Making recommendations on human resource issues and managing work performance problems.
  • Providing feedback and recommendations on technical staff performance to functional home.
  • Supporting functional managers in mentoring, training, developing, motivating, coaching, and evaluating staff performance.
  • Fostering good working relationships with staff, managers, and other divisions.
  • Working with the Project Manager to plan work, ensure resource availability, and allocate tasks and progress reporting against deliverables.
  • Reviewing and approving project-related documents and ensuring technical work is performed in accordance with applicable codes and standards.
  • Ensuring activities are executed in accordance with specified requirements, on-time, and within budget.
  • Interfacing with internal and external customers and stakeholders to establish priorities and ensure leads and staff are working on prioritized scope of work.
  • Providing strong leadership within the project team and company for aspects related to Reactivity Control Units engineering.
  • Interfacing with national and international regulatory bodies.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with clients, partners, suppliers, and project stakeholders.
  • Raising scope changes and critical issues to the PTD, PM, Director, and relevant functional managers.
  • Leading assigned engineers to find solutions for technical issues and engaging additional help from Functional Engineering if needed.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • University bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent, with a minimum of 10 years of technical experience in the CANDU Reactor field.
  • Overall understanding of the CANDU reactor design.
  • Knowledgeable in CANDU reactor reactivity control units.
  • Demonstrated skills in the leadership of a highly technical group.
  • Demonstrated people skills to interact with external clients and organizations.
  • Ability to resolve technical issues.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of quality assurance manuals and procedures.
  • Knowledge of reconciliation and registration processes is preferred.
  • Familiarity with CSA N285/ASME Section III pressure boundary design.
  • Qualification in ASME III appendix XXIII is beneficial.
  • Experienced in stress analysis and FEA methods alongside other design activities.
  • Knowledge in finite element analysis techniques and codes such as ANSYS, LS-DYNA will be beneficial.
  • Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario (or eligible for registration).
  • Good time management skills.
  • Willing to visit project sites to meet project and operational needs.
