Environmental Modeling Lead

Job Summary:
The Environmental Modeling Lead is responsible for interpreting client reference materials, collaborating with the Modeling Supervisor to plan an approach to environment construction, and building necessary assets using Maya and zBrush. This role also involves assembling assets in Unreal Engine to create the final assembly, as well as mentoring new or inexperienced artists to ensure adherence to best practices and standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Develop production-ready, artistically appealing, and technically sound 3D models based on project-specific needs, balancing requirements of downstream departments.
Construct and dress environments using manual and procedural techniques within Unreal Engine, ensuring efficiency and flexibility.
Utilize Unreal Engine's blueprint systems to build tools that enhance environment dressing efficiency.
Plan a modular approach to maximize asset reuse and environment flexibility.
Revise and/or clean up models sent by clients, ensuring technical and artistic standards are met.
Assist the Supervisor in reviewing artist work for technical and artistic standards, providing constructive feedback as needed.
Guide new hires in the use of pipeline tools and best practices, ensuring a smooth onboarding process.
Prepare guides and documentation to teach new tools or workflows to other artists, promoting knowledge sharing and collaboration.
Identify and address issues/problems, working with the Supervisor to plan corrective action and ensure continuous improvement.
Recognize and reward excellent performance from artists, fostering a positive and supportive team environment.
Critique models both artistically and technically, providing constructive feedback to improve artist skills and output.
Troubleshoot existing problems, ensuring seamless workflow and minimal downtime.
Coordinate with the Supervisor to investigate new tools and workflows that may enhance existing practices, driving innovation and growth.
Qualifications:
Degree/diploma in fine arts or animation, or equivalent experience.
Minimum 5 years' production experience in Animated Feature Films, Television, Commercial, and/or Video Game Production.
Masterful knowledge of Maya and zBrush is required, with experience with Unreal Engine strongly desired.
Familiarity with SpeedTree, World Machine, or other environment building tools is a plus.
Excellent communication and creative/artistic/aesthetic judgment skills, with the ability to convey complex ideas and concepts effectively.
Prior experience in supervising or training is an asset, with a strong understanding of downstream department processes and needs.
