Support Education Assistant

The School District #33 (Chilliwack) is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Education Assistant - Special Education to provide support to teachers and students with special needs.
Key Responsibilities- Provide one-on-one or small group support to students to reinforce instruction and promote learning.
- Assist with student supervision and classroom management to ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment.
- Support students with developing personal independence and self-care skills, including feeding, dressing, toileting, and mobility.
- Lift or assist other staff with lifting and/or positioning students as needed.
- Perform procedures as directed by a healthcare professional, such as catheterization, tube feeding, and seizure management.
- Administer student medication as directed by the Principal or healthcare professional.
- Provide first aid to students as needed.
- Assist with occupational and physiotherapy programs under the direction of an occupational or physiotherapist.
- Encourage the development of social and life skills through demonstration and positive reinforcement of acceptable behavior.
- Collaborate with special education and classroom teachers, as well as parents, to determine student needs and progress.
- Clean, disinfect, and wash all therapy equipment, toys, appliances, and cupboards.
- Assist with food purchase, preparation, and cleanup of the kitchen.
- Support the integration of students into regular classes.
- Implement and monitor behavior management programs, including observation, record-keeping, and follow-up.
- Provide transportation to students for school-related activities.
- Adapt instructional materials to meet the specific needs of students, such as simplifying instructions or student responses.
- Assist with preparation and marking of instructional materials, such as worksheets and tests.
- Assist with the distribution and collection of materials and equipment for students.
- High school diploma and special education assistant certificate or equivalent.
- Valid Class 5 driver's license.
- Basic knowledge of computer functions.
- Valid Safety Oriented First Aid certificate.
- Knowledge of psychosocial issues of special needs students.
- Knowledge of health and safety procedures, including Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System and Workers' Compensation Board regulations.
- Ability to extend and model patience, care, tolerance, and understanding.
- Ability to apply behavior management strategies to a given situation.
- Ability to respond to violent behavior.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to perform individually and as part of a team.
- Ability to use tact, diplomacy, and human relations skills for frequent contacts of a difficult, specialized, or sensitive nature.
