The Avon Maitland District School Board is seeking a qualified Sign Language Interpreter to provide access and support for students who are Deaf and/or hard of hearing.

Job Summary

This position provides ASL interpretation services to student(s) in a regular classroom and school setting, facilitating communication and promoting inclusive learning environments.

Responsibilities
  • Provide ASL interpretation services to student(s) in a regular classroom and school setting, including access to the Ontario Curriculum and school activities.
  • Proactively support the school team to maintain an inclusive learning environment for Deaf students, recognizing the role of the classroom teacher and assisting with instructional, environmental, and assessment accommodations.
  • Provide ASL Interpreting services upon request of the school team and attend meetings as required.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the System Principal of Learning Services.
Preferred Qualifications, Experiences and Skills
  • Minimum three (3) year College Diploma in ASL-English Interpreting; a University Degree is an asset.
  • Active membership in good standing with the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters (CASLI) is an asset.
  • Demonstrated expressive and receptive ASL skills.
  • Demonstrated expressive and receptive spoken and written English skills.
  • Experience working as an interpreter with school-aged children.
  • Knowledge of the basic principles of educational practices, the function of support services, and the role of interpreters as part of the students' educational team.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote equitable and inclusive education for all students, and advocate for equity-deserving groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to adhere to the CASLI Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct.
