Job Title: First Nations Cultural Liaison

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated individual to join our team as a First Nations Cultural Liaison. This role plays a vital part in promoting cultural understanding and providing support to First Nations students, families, and staff within the K-12 public education system.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with teachers and leaders to integrate culturally relevant content into learning activities.
  • Provide guidance and support in connecting to appropriate community members, knowledge keepers, and Elders to share knowledge and perspectives.
  • Offer consultation and guidance to educators with regard to appropriate First Nations protocols.
  • Organize cultural events and presentations to enhance cultural awareness among students, staff, and the broader community.
  • Coordinate collaborative projects and initiatives that promote cultural exchange and community engagement.
  • Provide individualized support to Indigenous students to address academic, social, and emotional needs.
  • Facilitate student cultural and leadership activities and mentorship programs designed to empower Indigenous students.
  • Advocate for the inclusion of, and provide culturally sensitive counseling and mental health services within the school system.
  • Serve as a liaison between Indigenous families and the school system, facilitating communication and collaboration.
  • Organize family nights and support Indigenous Parent Advisory Group meetings to build relationships and improve opportunities to involve parents in their children's education.
Qualifications:
  • Lived experience and strong knowledge and understanding of First Nations cultures, histories, and contemporary issues.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience working in education or community outreach, preferably within a First Nations context.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement culturally responsive programs and initiatives.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and social justice in education.
  • Must have own reliable transportation.
  • The ability to speak an Indigenous language is an asset.
