Substance Use and Mental Health Specialist

Island Health is seeking a highly skilled Substance Use and Mental Health Specialist to join our team.
CompensationThe estimated salary for this role is $65,000 - $85,000 per year, depending on experience.
Job DescriptionThis role involves providing intensive case management services to individuals with substance use and mental health issues in a community setting. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of harm reduction philosophy and practice, as well as HIV, HCV, and related issues.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing support and guidance to clients with substance use and mental health concerns;
- Assessing client needs and developing individualized treatment plans;
- Working collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive care;
- Engaging with clients who have severe substance use problems and do not readily engage in healthcare services;
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A Baccalaureate Degree in a health-related discipline from an approved post-secondary institution;
- Recognized post-basic education related to mental illness and/or substance use;
- Two years of recent related experience supporting clients with substance use and mental health issues in a community setting;
- Strong knowledge of harm reduction philosophy and practice, as well as HIV, HCV, and related issues;
- Experience working with persons living with substance use and mental health concerns;
- Experience in engagement with persons who have severe substance use problems and do not readily engage in healthcare services;
- An understanding and application of substance misuse assessments, treatment methodologies, intervention strategies, the change process, and community dynamics;
- Knowledge of applicable legislation, such as Mental Health and Child Protection legislation;
- Knowledge of available programs and services, their interrelationships, and their function in delivering services in the community;

- Demonstrated competence in the treatment of addiction and mental illness congruent with Island Health's framework and standards within a rehabilitation/recovery, harm-reduction focused model;
- Demonstrated ability to practice from a harm reduction approach;
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships and nurture an environment of quality, trauma-informed, and culturally safe care;
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills;
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team;
- Prioritize and organize workload effectively;
- Ability to operate a personal computer with various Windows-based software;
