Island Health is seeking a highly skilled Substance Use and Mental Health Specialist to join our team.

Compensation

The estimated salary for this role is $65,000 - $85,000 per year, depending on experience.

Job Description

This role involves providing intensive case management services to individuals with substance use and mental health issues in a community setting. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of harm reduction philosophy and practice, as well as HIV, HCV, and related issues.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing support and guidance to clients with substance use and mental health concerns;
  • Assessing client needs and developing individualized treatment plans;
  • Working collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive care;
  • Engaging with clients who have severe substance use problems and do not readily engage in healthcare services;
Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A Baccalaureate Degree in a health-related discipline from an approved post-secondary institution;
  • Recognized post-basic education related to mental illness and/or substance use;
  • Two years of recent related experience supporting clients with substance use and mental health issues in a community setting;
  • Strong knowledge of harm reduction philosophy and practice, as well as HIV, HCV, and related issues;
  • Experience working with persons living with substance use and mental health concerns;
  • Experience in engagement with persons who have severe substance use problems and do not readily engage in healthcare services;
  • An understanding and application of substance misuse assessments, treatment methodologies, intervention strategies, the change process, and community dynamics;
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, such as Mental Health and Child Protection legislation;
  • Knowledge of available programs and services, their interrelationships, and their function in delivering services in the community;

  • Demonstrated competence in the treatment of addiction and mental illness congruent with Island Health's framework and standards within a rehabilitation/recovery, harm-reduction focused model;
  • Demonstrated ability to practice from a harm reduction approach;
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and nurture an environment of quality, trauma-informed, and culturally safe care;
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team;
  • Prioritize and organize workload effectively;
  • Ability to operate a personal computer with various Windows-based software;
