Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Intellectual Property Strategist to join our team at Pharmascience. This is a unique opportunity to leverage your expertise in patent protection and clearance to enhance the company's licensed and internally developed products.

About the Role:

In this key position, you will be responsible for designing and implementing effective intellectual property strategies to support business objectives. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to assess generic market entry dates, regulatory submission dates, and launch dates in targeted countries.

Responsibilities:

  • Intellectual Property Strategy Development: Develop well-thought-out and creative intellectual property strategies from product selection to launch, considering business objectives, patent landscapes, regulatory exclusivities, and local regulatory requirements.
  • Pipeline Product Selection: Participate in pipeline product selection by assessing generic market entry dates, regulatory submission dates, and launch dates in targeted countries, taking into account business objectives, patent landscapes, regulatory exclusivities, and local regulatory requirements.
  • R&D Collaboration: Advise the R&D team on formulation development, taking into account the patent landscape and established IP strategy to mitigate litigation risks.
  • IP Landscape Monitoring: Timely and effectively communicate key changes in the IP landscape affecting project timelines and litigation risks.
  • Searches and Due Diligence: Perform patentability, validity, and freedom-to-operate searches (e.g., web, patent databases, and literature searches) and conduct intellectual property due diligences to support business development transactions.
  • Litigation Support: Support internal litigation on intellectual property-related proceedings, challenges, disputes, and litigation.
  • Regulatory Updates: Stay current with relevant intellectual property legislative developments in core markets.

Requirements:

  • Scientific Background: Excellent scientific background in organic chemistry, biochemistry, and/or formulation development.
  • Knowledge and Skills: Basic knowledge of concepts relating to formulation development, stereochemistry, solid-state structure of active pharmaceutical ingredients, particle size distribution, X-ray powder diffraction analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and other analytical methods; drug bioavailability and drug metabolism.
  • Regulatory Exclusivities: Familiarity with regulatory exclusivities such as data protection and market exclusivity for new pharmaceutical products in Canada, the US, and Europe (including new chemical entities), as well as other patent-related exclusivities like orphan drug designation, pediatric extension, CSPs, etc.
  • Bilingualism: Bilingual skills in French and English are essential given the interactions with international external partners.
  • Technical Skills: Ability to navigate patent databases (CIPO, USPTO, EPO-Patent Register, Espacenet, Orbit/Questel/Patsnap, or equivalent).
  • Soft Skills: Strong communication and problem-solving skills; ability to ask questions, approach clients' matters diligently, make complex ideas clear, stimulate creative thinking, and maintain integrity, professionalism, and high ethical standards.
