The Opportunity

Assiniboine Park Conservancy is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Associate Veterinarian to join our team. As a key member of our animal health department, you will play a critical role in providing exceptional care to the animals at our zoo.

Your Role:

  1. Develop and implement proactive and reactive animal health care plans to ensure the well-being of our animals.
  2. Collaborate with our animal care team to provide direct supervision and training to ensure the highest level of animal care.
  3. Conduct thorough quarantine examinations and testing to ensure the health and safety of our animals and prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
  4. Work closely with our animal care and animal health teams to ensure the safe transport and care of animals.
  5. Develop and maintain accurate and effective medical records for all clinical and postmortem cases.
  6. Participate in the development and implementation of reproductive and nutrition programs to promote the health and well-being of our animals.
  7. Collaborate with external institutions and experts to stay up-to-date on the latest animal health and welfare best practices.
  8. Provide emergency veterinary care to our animals and participate in on-call duties.
  9. Contribute to a positive and healthy team atmosphere within our animal health and animal care departments.

Qualifications:

  1. Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from a recognized educational institute (in good standing) and eligibility for licensure in Manitoba.
  2. Minimum 2-3 years of full-time zoological medicine experience.
  3. ACZM boarded or board-eligible a plus.
  4. Strong interest in large animal medicine an asset.
  5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially in a team environment.
  6. Brilliant organizational and planning skills, as well as observational skills.
  7. Excellent animal health knowledge, particularly related to wildlife in human care.
  8. Strong animal husbandry knowledge, particularly related to wildlife in human care.
  9. Ability to develop effective working relationships with various levels of management, animal health and animal care staff, guests, external colleagues, etc.
  10. Ability to balance multiple activities and prioritize tasks to ensure ideal performance.
  11. Knowledge of the importance of self-care and mental health impacts in the profession.
  12. Capacity to practice sound reasoning independently, while contributing to the team environment.
  13. Ability and interest in public speaking.
  14. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
  15. Ability to be on call.
  16. Experience using the Zoo Information Management System (ZIMS).
  17. Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel.
  18. Class 5 Driver's License.
