The Opportunity

At Assiniboine Park Conservancy, we are seeking a skilled and compassionate Associate Zoo Veterinarian to join our animal health team. As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in providing exceptional animal health care and contributing to the conservation of wildlife.

Your Role:

  1. Deliver high-quality animal health care services, including routine check-ups, vaccinations, and medical treatments, to ensure the well-being of our animals.
  2. Supervise and mentor veterinary interns, veterinary technicians, and other staff members to promote professional growth and development.
  3. Collaborate with external organizations to advance animal nutrition, reproduction, and welfare programs.
  4. Develop and implement effective quarantine protocols to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
  5. Assist with animal care and transport requirements, ensuring seamless operations.
  6. Monitor zoonotic diseases and educate staff on prevention and control measures.
  7. Perform routine post-mortem exams and maintain accurate medical records.
  8. Participate in reproductive and nutrition programs, and contribute to animal welfare monitoring activities.
  9. Provide expert mentorship to veterinary students, veterinary technician students, and undergraduate university students.
  10. Consult with local veterinary experts in areas such as ophthalmology, surgery, cardiology, and dentistry.
  11. Develop and administer research programs, and provide clinical services to government agencies and colleagues.
  12. Foster collaborative relationships with external institutions, and provide animal health expertise as an Assiniboine Park Conservancy representative.
  13. Respond to after-hours emergency veterinary care requests, and participate in on-call duties.
  14. Contribute to a positive and healthy team atmosphere, and participate in animal care activities, including meetings and exhibit design discussions.
  15. Assist the Director of Animal Health and Nutrition as needed.

Qualifications:

  1. Must hold a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from a recognized educational institution and be eligible for licensure in Manitoba.
  2. Minimum 2-3 years of full-time zoological medicine experience.
  3. Preference for candidates who are ACZM boarded or board-eligible.
  4. Completion of a zoological medicine internship and/or residency highly desirable.
  5. Strong interest in large animal medicine an asset.
  6. Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  7. Ability to develop effective working relationships with various levels of management, staff, and external colleagues.
  8. Capacity to prioritize tasks and delegate responsibilities as needed.
  9. Knowledge of the importance of self-care and mental health impacts in the profession.
  10. Ability and interest in public speaking.
  11. Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
  12. Experience using the Zoo Information Management System (ZIMS).
  13. Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
  14. Class 5 Driver's License.
