Language Teacher Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Language Teacher to join our team at the Kootenay/Okanagan school. The successful candidate will be responsible for instructing elementary students and school staff in the nsyilxwc?n language and cultural ways of the sqilxw/sylix people.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide language instruction for the school, including whole class and small groups, using a variety of strategies.
  • Oversee the development of a nsyilxwc?n language curriculum, rooted in traditional sqilxw cultural practices and knowledge.
  • Share cultural knowledge and provide a variety of cultural experiences and activities for the school.
  • Submit and follow a yearly overview inclusive of Land Based Learning principles.
  • Develop teaching resources in collaboration with the L&C team and other school staff.
  • Coordinate field trips to support L&C learning.
  • Develop appropriate units and daily lesson plans utilizing traditional techniques.
  • Identify opportunities to integrate language and culture into all aspects of classroom and land-based learning.
Requirements:
  • BC Teacher Certification and/or independent school teacher certificate and/or equivalent, including Bachelor in nsyilxwc?n Language Fluency.
  • Intermediate or better fluency in the nsyilxwc?n language both oral and written preferred.
  • Knowledge of traditional Okanagan cultural practices and protocols.
  • Familiar with a variety of language immersion delivery strategies and methods.
  • Computer and technology skills an asset.
  • Current First Aid/CPR or willing to obtain.
