Cultural Immersion School Language Educator

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Cultural Immersion School Language Educator to join our team at the Okanagan Indian Band. As a key member of our Language and Culture Program, you will play a vital role in teaching elementary students and school staff the nsyilxwc-n language and cultural ways of the sqilxw/sylix people.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive language and cultural curriculum for elementary students (K4-G7)
  • Provide language instruction for the school, including whole class and small groups, using a variety of strategies
  • Oversee the development of a nsyilxwc-n language curriculum, rooted in traditional sqilxw cultural practices and knowledge
  • Share cultural knowledge and provide a variety of cultural experiences and activities for the school
  • Collaborate with the Language program's instructor, assistants, and learners, as well as with teaching staff and other support staff
Requirements:
  • BC Teacher Certification and/or independent school teacher certificate and/or equivalent, including Bachelor in nsyilxwc-n Language Fluency
  • Intermediate or better fluency in the nsyilxwc-n language both oral and written preferred
  • Knowledge of traditional Okanagan cultural practices and protocols
  • Experience teaching or mentoring learners in a multi-level learning environment or experience mentoring students/individuals in the Okanagan Language
