Key Responsibilities


As a member of the First Nations Overdose Prevention Services team, the successful candidate will work collaboratively to support clients in achieving their self-identified goals for safety, recovery, and community connection.


Key responsibilities include:



  • Monitoring clients' health conditions and environments, documenting behavioural, physical, and cognitive changes as per standard procedures
  • Establishing culturally respectful relationships with clients, providing emotional support, and facilitating self-management skills
  • Linking clients to community resources and programs, and assisting with accessing benefits and services
  • Providing brief assessments and planning on issues related to substance use, overdose prevention, and harm reduction
  • Liaising with healthcare providers, government agencies, and community organizations to advocate for clients' needs
  • Administering medication to clients under the direction of the Registered Nurse, and providing medication reminders
  • Supporting clients in accessing food, supplements, and other essential resources, and providing advocacy as needed
  • Engaging in conversations about overdose risk and substance use safety options, and facilitating drug checking services
  • Performing other related duties as assigned

Requirements


To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will have:



  • A Substance Use Certificate, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Experience working with clients with substance use issues, preferably in an Indigenous context
  • Knowledge of Indigenous health approaches, protocol, and cultural issues, as well as residential school issues and their effects on First Nations people
  • Valid BC driver's license and vehicle, and current CPR certification
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to develop consultative relationships with healthcare professionals, counselors, traditional healers, and Elders
  • Working knowledge of harm reduction principles and practices, Indigenous healthcare perspectives, and trauma-informed approaches
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with a strong commitment to cultural safety and humility
