Job Description

A challenging role has become available for a highly motivated and experienced individual to take on the responsibilities of Hog Barn Manager. Reporting directly to the Manager, Hog Production, you will be accountable for all aspects of this sow unit.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership and Training: Lead by example to provide effective leadership, coaching, and training to employees under your direction. This includes recruitment, selection, and orientation of new team members.
  • Workforce Planning: Evaluate the effectiveness of staffing complements and individual performance in meeting production targets. You will also be responsible for creating an environment where employees are motivated to achieve company goals.
  • Purchasing and Inventory Management: Report on variances in purchasing and develop corrective action plans to avoid shortages or excess inventory. Ensure accurate payroll record-keeping, tracking of absenteeism, vacation days, and hours worked.
  • Safety and Maintenance: Maintain a safe working environment by educating and directing employees on equipment use and safe work procedures while ensuring compliance with the Maple Leaf Foods Occupational Health and Safety Program. Implement a routine maintenance program to keep the site in good repair.
  • Data Analysis and Decision Making: Review data reporting in all areas to identify efficiencies and make strategic decisions that meet and exceed production and financial targets. Work closely with the Manager, Hog Production or Senior Specialist, Hog Production to implement new programs.
  • Team Collaboration: Prioritize workload for your position and the team through collaboration with Team Leads. Identify mechanical issues and recommend solutions to maximize equipment performance. Attend relevant meetings, training workshops, and ensure accurate inventory levels.

Required Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in a swine production role is required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a leadership role is necessary.
  • A valid driver's license is required as the successful candidate must have the ability to attend training/meetings.
  • Computer knowledge is essential.
  • Grade 12 diploma is preferred.
  • Post-secondary education is an asset.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills are required.
  • Excellent communication skills (both oral and written) are necessary.
  • The ability to train and coach employees effectively, work in a team environment, manage stressful situations, and work independently is required.
  • Excellent knowledge of hog production related to the role is expected.

Estimated Salary: $60,000 - $80,000 per year
