Role Summary

Scotiabank is seeking a seasoned leader to oversee the Special Accounts Banking function for International Business Banking portfolios, ensuring compliance with regulations, internal policies, and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic direction, leadership, and oversight to the Special Accounts Banking team, ensuring effective operations and risk management.
  • Develop and implement strategies to identify and mitigate risks, maximize recovery, and minimize risks in the assigned portfolio.
  • Contribute to the Bank's profits by successfully managing a portfolio of problem credits, including stressed debt loans and assets in the commercial and corporate segments.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including regulators, banking partners, and other financial institutions.
  • Monitor and report on the portfolio's quality and risk, ensuring adherence to regulatory and internal policies.
  • Communicate the Bank's risk culture and risk appetite statement to the team, ensuring a consistent and effective risk management approach.
  • Develop and implement a people strategy to attract, retain, develop, and motivate the team, fostering an inclusive work environment and promoting a coaching mindset and behaviors.
  • Lead and direct the SAM Banking units across Latin America and the Caribbean, ensuring alignment with the Bank's risk appetite and risk tolerances.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in managing work-out strategies and collections in stressed debt loans and assets in the commercial and corporate segments.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Bank's lending policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Experience in assessing complex corporate and capital structures, legal documents, and exposure to derivatives.
  • Strong credit skills (+5 years) that enable identification of forward-looking risks and effective mitigation strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with senior-level executives and manage relationships with different stakeholders in international jurisdictions.
  • Fluency in English and Spanish is required.
